Catuaba is a Guarani word meaning “what gives strength to the Indian”. The word refers to an infusion made from the bark of one of several Brazilian trees. The latin names of these trees are Trichilia catigua and Erythroxylum vaccinifolium, though other species are used, these two are most prominent. These to trees are aptly named ‘big Catuaba’ (Trichlia catigua), and ‘small Catuaba’ (Erythroxylum catuaba), indicative of their heights. Both big and little Catuaba are flowering plants with oval shaped leaves. The more popular of these two being the big Catuaba, which is offered by Potion World, and will be the one we will discuss.
The history of Catuaba is poorly recorded and largely unknown. The plant was first recorded by A. J. da Silva in 1906. Since its first recording Catuaba has been recorded few other times until recent years. Though largely unknown to the rest of the world for most of time, it would seem that the people of Brazil have long used this herb for its arousing benefits.
Big Catuaba is widely distributed throughout Brazil, and is popularly used as an aphrodisiac, and stimulant for the nervous systems. It is also popularly used as a treatment for stress, memory deficit, digestive disorders, and fatigue.
In recent times, Catuaba has slowly grown in polarity with research starting in the late 1990’s. Lab tests have shown since that time that Catuaba has antidepressant-like effects, as well as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral characteristics. It also has dopaminergic actions, meaning that it can modulate the brains receptors that related to transmitting dopamine. This function is important because it can be helpful when with conditions like depression, sexual dysfunctions and anxiety. Its most popular use is still as an aphrodisiac as it stimulates the central nervous system, which can help with erectile dysfunction or lack of sexual desire. Muira Puama is often paired with Catuaba, and is said to enhance the aphrodisiac effect of both plants.
